Abstract

A hydrocarbon polymer is stabilized with (a) a phenolic antioxidant together with (b) a benzophenone containing hydroxy and alkoxy substituents. The polymer may be derived from ethylene, propylene, butylene and/or styrene and of the many specified stabilizers those preferred are: (a) 4,41-thiobis(3-alkyl-6-t-alkyl phenols), 2,6-di-t-butyl-4-methyl phenol, 2,21-methylene-bis(5-isopropyl phenol), 2,21-me-thylene-bis(4-methyl-6-t-butyl phenol) and N-acyl-p-aminophenols, and (b) 2-hydroxy-4-alkoxy-benzophenones and 2,21-dihydroxy-4-alkoxy-benzophenones. Optional ingredients are Group I to IV metal salts of organic acids, Group II metal sulphides or selenides, and pigments such as titanium and zinc oxides.
