Abstract
A bituminous composition comprises wet sand, lime, a bituminous binder selected from the group consisting of asphaltic bitumens, asphaltic bitumens cut back with petroleum distillates or coal tar distillates, and road oil, one or more phenols boiling below 225 DEG C. which may be hydroxybenzene, cresols, xylenols or coal tar fractions containing these substances, and a wetting agent which is a carboxylic acid, preferably a naphthenic acid, an organic sulphonic acid or an acid ester of sulphuric acid. The ingredients may be added to the wet sand in any order, or the wetting agent may be incorporated in the bituminous binder and the mixture with the remaining ingredients may be added in any order, or both the wetting agent and the phenols boiling below 225 DEG C. may be incorporated in the binder and this mixture added to the wet sand either before or after the lime, but may not be mixed with lime before the addition of wet sand.
