Abstract
A solution of bituminous substances in one or more organic solvents contains a coal-tar oil boiling between 230 DEG C. and 330 DEG C. and containing at least 15 per cent of one or more higher phenols, i.e. phenols with a boiling point of from 230 DEG C. to about 350 DEG C., the phenol content of said oil being substantially free from lower phenols. The oil may consist solely of higher phenols. The bituminous substance may be a carbon-free or carbon-poor coaltar pitch containing less than 15 per cent by weight of benzene-insoluble matter, an asphalt-free resin bitumen, or a bitumen containing less than 10 per cent by weight of heptane-insoluble matter. The pitch or bitumen may be softened with the coaltar oil and the mixture diluted to a suitable consistency with the organic solvent or solvents, e.g. solvent or heavy benzene.
