Abstract
665,941. Control of A.C. motors; controllers. DETREX CORPORATION. Aug. 3, 1949. No. 20263/49. Class 38 (iii). A single-phase motor M which drives a centrifuge 5 or the like is accelerated in timed steps so as to allow the initially unbalanced load within the drum to be adjusted before the machine reaches its maximum speed. A timer motor M1 drives a cam shaft and is started by closure of push-button 67 which is shortcircuited bv cam-operated contacts 27a, 28a, to allow release of the button. Relays R, R1, R2, R3, are then operated in succession at timed intervals so that full line voltage is first applied to the driving motor to overcome the inertia of the drum and to accelerate the motor to a moderate speed. The motor voltage is then reduced by the connection of its armature to a tapping on an auto-transformer 9, the connection afterwards being shifted to a higher voltage-tapping. Finally, full line voltage is again applied to the motor which accelerates to its maximum speed. When the cam shaft has completed one revolution the motors M, M1, are de-energized and the cycle is completed.
