In apparatus for raising and lowering a long object, such as a ship's accommodation ladder, by means of falls 1, 2 and a winch 3, the end of the fall 1 is'anchored at 9 whereas the corresponding end of the fall 2 is secured to a winch 12 which is actuated, after the ladder has been raised or lowered in a horizontal position, to raise or lower the associated end of the ladder.
