Abstract

1,247,362. Trimming ships. HYDRAULIC DRILLING EQUIPMENT Ltd. 27 May, 1969 [26 Feb., 1968], No. 9210/68. Heading B7M. [Also in Division E1] A floating platform or ship is stabilized by sensing its movement relative to a datum position, e.g. the sea-bed, and actuating a swashplate-controlled hydraulic drive to reduce the movement. The invention is shown in Fig. 1 as applied to a drilling rig 2, 3, 4 mounted on a floating platform 1, but may be applied to the platform itself. A line 24 extends from a weight 28 on the sea bed round a pulley 25 to a spring-biased winch 23, and rotation of the pulley 25 is detected by contacts 30, 31. These contacts thus detect vertical motion, but a set of contacts 32, e.g. four such contacts, arranged around the line 24, detect horizontal motion. To reduce surface effects, e.g. of wind, a rigid sleeve may surround the wire and depend into the water.
