Abstract

In a submersible drilling unit for exploration by drilling and core sampling at the sea bed, consisting of a mechanical assembly which can be lowered by a winch on a surface ship to the sea bed where it rests on a suitable base, the novel feature of the unit being that it is provided with mechanical means for carrying out various drilling and core sampling operations the need for diving personnel, such operation comprises the formation of a drilling pipe string at the sea bed by successive additions of pipes lowered from the surface, the setting into rotation and translation of the pipe-string, the injection of drilling mud and the installation of the core samples, the functioning and monitoring of these mechanical means being ensured by remote control and measurement.
