Abstract

1,238,150. Well maintenance tool. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 12 June, 1970 [30 June, 1969], No. 28561/70. Heading E1F. A device mounted on a wellhead 10, Fig. 1, to support a downhole well maintenance tool 64 comprises a wire line 90 (Fig. 3) attached to the tool and spooled on winch drum 88 enclosed in a housing 26 which is filled, via tool housing 20, with production fluid at well head pressure. Maintenance tool 64 is, in its raised position, contained in tool housing 20 and is raised from and lowered into well tube 16 through valve assembly 34. Drum 88 is mounted on and secured to housing 100 of hydraulic radial piston motor 92 whose shaft 102 is held against rotation. Valve assembly 34 comprises drain valve 36, isolation valve 44, the opening of which subjects the interior of housings 20 and 26 to well head pressure, and vent valve 50. Valve assembly 34 and hydraulic motor 92 are remotely controlled. Wire line 90 may comprise a solid wire, a stranded wire or a flat steel ribbon or tape. The device may be used with land or underwater wells. To give the device buoyancy in water there may be attached to tool housing 20 a vessel filled with foam blocks, or an air tight vessel 116, which may be pressurised.
