Abstract

1,006,167. Wells. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. April 18, 1963 [April 20, 1962], No. 15393/63. Heading E1F. A blowout preventer 43, 44 comprises a body 65 having pipe openings 66, 67 leading to a pipe passage 70, a pair of sealing rams 72, 73 sealing means 80, 81 on the adjacent ends of the rams, mechanism 100, 104, 105, 112, 113, 78, 79, 76, 77 connected to the rams, an electric motor 96 carried by the body, and a control circuit for the motor positioned remotely from the motor. The preventer forms with blowout preventers 45, 45a a unit which is fixed to the casinghead 33 of an underwater wellhead and to a marine conductor 54. The circuit is carried by a barge 11 and is provided with variable voltage means which permit the pressure between the rams to be varied. The motor 96 is coupled to the shaft 100 and to a hydraulic motor 115 which operates the rams in the event of an electric power failure. The edges of the rams are shaped to engage the pipe 71. Below the rams and within the housing are straight edged rams 82, 83 actuated by similar mechanism. The preventers 45, 45a are of the radially contractible type actuated by electrohydraulic operating units 46, 47. Specification 1,006,168 is referred to.
