Abstract

1,006,168. Wells. INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. April 18, 1963 [April 20, 1962], No. 15396/63. Heading E1F. A component of an underwater wellhead assembly which is adapted to be mounted on an underwater casinghead is operated both electrically and hydraulically. The assembly comprises radially-contractible blowout preventers 45, 45a ram blowout preventers 43, 44 kill valves 57, 57a choke valves 58, 58a and a connector 40 adapted to engage the casinghead 33, all of which are both electrically and hydraulically operable. The electric operation of the rams of the preventers 43, 44 is controlled from a barge 11, leads 71, 78 connecting ram actuating electric motors within casings 63, 64 to a controller 153 and means being provided to adjust the pressures of the rams. The electric operation of the remaining components is by electro-hydraulic units 47, 46, 67, 69, 68. A typical unit 47 comprises an-electric motor 95a controlled from the barge to drive selectively pumps 99a, 100a and a valve 113a which is set by a pressure operated unit 117a to connect the lines 49, 49a leading from a component (the preventer 45a) to the pump circuit or to a reservoir 65. Fluid for the hydraulic actuation of the components is supplied by a manifold 127 connected to each of the components and to valves 143, 144, 145. The hydraulic operation is initiated by moving a valve sleeve 129 to connect the components and valves to a hydraulic supply. The shafts of the electric motors of the preventers 43, 44 are connected to hydraulic motors 72, which are operated with the other components when the supply is connected. The valves 143, 144, 145 nullify the pumping effect of the motors 72, when the electric motors of the preventers 43, 44 are driven. Specification 1,006,167 is referred to.
