LONDON, AND EDWARD CECIL MILLS, OF CAMBORNE, ENGLAND, ASSIGNORS TO HOL- MAN BROTHERS LIMITED, F GAMBORNE, ENGLAND Application filed March 13, 1930, Serial No. 435,567, and in Great Britain March 22, 1929.
This invention relates to hoists and has for its object to provide a self contained hoist adapted to bedriven by an elastic fluid motor capable of being easily controlled. 7
The present invention consists of a hoist having a drum driven by a rotary motor, wherein the drum forms the casing of the rotary motor. The rotary engine may be arran ed to drive the drum through a train of gearing. v r l A manner of carrying out the invention is illustrated by the accompanyingdrawing of which Figure l is a general sectional elevation of the hoist, and Figure 2 is a sectional view through line A 2 of Figure 1. r
In this drawing a is a cable 'drumarra-nged as the casing ofa coaxial rotary compressed air or steam motor.
The engine has a central cylindrical valve 72 around which rotates a cylinder carrier 0 having radial cylinders 010 in which reciprocate pistons 02.
The cylinder carrier 0 is provided with cylindrical extensions 01 and'c21 extending from each side of the cylinders 010 along the axis of the carrier 0 into the opposite sides of the drum and is sup orted therein by'ball bearings 64 and c5. lain bearings maybe substituted for the ball bearings 04 and c5. One end of the drum a has a cylindrical extension a5 arranged'to rotate in a bearing a6 in the main standard a of the hoist, while the other end of the drum a has a cylindrical extension a7 arranged to rotate on a cylindrical extension 81 formed in or supported by the standard at the other side of the hoistfi The outer end of the central cylindrical valve 7) extends through the cylindrical extension a5 at one end of the drum a to a reversing wheel 'w provided with a spring controlled Stop @111 adapted to engage recesses on a plate 102 fixed on the end of the drum extension a5 extending through its bearing a6, so as to hold the valve relatively to the the desired direction drum in either of two positions according to of rotation of the'hoist drum. 1
The gudgeon pins cl of the pistons extend through longitudinal slots 07 inthe walls of the cylinders and carry at their ends roller bearings [54 of-which the outer races form rollers 6 running in lateral grooves formed m rings 7" rotating freely on ball bearings fl carried by eccentrics, g, 91 formed on the inner sides ofth d a1 and ag'of the hoist drum (1' and through which the valve extends freely at one side a2 of the drum, while at the other'sideof-the drum a power shaft extension 01 of the cylinder carrier 0 extends freely through the adjacent eccentric g to the pinion h of spur gearing of the drum. n
In the carrier 0 is formed a ball bearing (21 supporting the inner end of the valve 6 in dependently of the cylindrical valve faces.
To facilitate the reversing action, the radial cylinders 01 are arranged at 120 apart in the same transverse plane and the valve provided with oppositely disposed ports 62 standards of the'hoist. a
The pinion h at theendof the power shaft extension 01 of the carrier 0 is arranged to mesh witha spur wheel hi on a shaft 722 running in bearings h3 M: in the standards of the hoist and carrying a pinion h5.' The pinion k5 of the shaft k2 is arranged to gear with a spur wheel k6 on a second shaft 717 also running in bearings h8;h9 in the hoist standard and carrying a pinion hlO adapted to mesh with an internallytoothed wheel al O provided in the 7 side al of the hoist drum on The pinion k5 is arrangedto slide on the shaft [L2 in or outnof gear with the wheel hfi by means of a lever Z of which the shaft Z1 extends through thecasing. of the engine and has at its lower enda crank Z2 of which the pin Z3 extends into an annular groove Z4 providedin an extension of the pinion 7145i 1 The gearing maybe provided with any suit} able disengaging mechanism and may be of the variableratio type.

In operation it will be seen that to stop the motor after either hoisting or lowering, it is only necessary to grasp the slowly rotating reversing wheel to which also operates as a control wheel when the necessary relative angular movement of the valve or the phase of the valve will be changed. If the control wheel w is released when the motor stops after the hoisting operation, lowering can 'be effected by the gravity of the load ,aloneunder control of a brake m operated by means of a shaft m1 and lever m2 or by holding the control wheel JV till the appropriate valve position isattainedithevmotor will reverse, and lowering can be effected by the reverse running of the motor under control of the brake.
It will thus be seen that it the control wheel V is stopped the hoist stops, for the ports [)6 in the drum sleeve a5 overtake those "of the valve b and so cut off the supply of motive fluid from passage k. Further when the momentum of the drum is'so high that the drum sleeve a5 during control moves into a position corresponding to reverse, the drum or will then rotate in the opposite direction, and if the control wheel WV is still held, the drum sleeve a5 will again out oif the supply of motive fluid to the cylinders. v
