power driven type. A further object of my 1 invention is to provide an improved double drum hoisting mechanism having a single driving motor therefor. A still further object of my invention is to provide an mproved double drum hoisting mechanism with a single driving motor located within said drums and having an independent driving connection for each of the latter. Other objects of my invention will, however, hereinafter more fully appear.

Fig. 1 is a view partially in central versection, and partially in elevation with parts broken away, of the hoisting mechanism constituting the illustrative disclosure of my invention.

In its illustrative form my invention coniprises a frame 1 2 and 3 disposed at the opposite ends thereof and providing bearings for members hereafter described in which in turn bearings are arranged at 4: and 5 respectively for the shafts, one of which is shown at 6, of the drums f! and 8, said drums at their adjacent ends rotating upon grease bearings 9 and 10 formed upon the exterior of the stationary motor housing 11, which housing is mounted as 111- dicated upon the main frame 1. The motor housing 11 is bored to form intercominunieating cylinders12 and 13 of a well knownform and as more fully disclosed in my Patent #15202 8 patented Dec. 23, 1924. -VVithin the cylinders 12 and 13 rotate rotors having supporting brackets la and 15 provided with intermeshing tooth blades 16 which, as they rotate, form expansion pockets to which fluid supply by way of a passage 17 andinlet port 18 is admitted for the purpose of causing simultaneous ro-. tation of the rotors and the production of power.
r orr es p The rotors 14 and 15 are journaled upon 7 suitable shafts in theheads 19 and 20 of the motor housing 11 and are herein of less length 7 thanthe housing, the used motive fluid exhausting therefrom to the spaces provided at the ends of the rotors and out through open ings in said ends, and in the ends of the drums and through the members 19' and 20 hereinafter described, none of these exhaust ports being shown, as their nature will be obvious.
The rotor 14L herein also has a shaft 21 proj ecting through the opposite ends of the housing and carrying gears 22 and-22. keyed thereon atthe opposite sides of the housing. These gears 22 and 22 drive respectively gears 23, 23" which are fixed to short shafts 24, 24', respectively. The latter are located in line with the axis of rotation of the drums and journaled in turn in bearings 25, 25 in the stationary motor housing 11 and in heads 26, of which .but one is shown and whichv carry shafts 6 upon which the drums 7 and 8 are supported. Smaller pinions27, 27 are likewise fixed upon the rotating shaft 24; and these in turn drive respectively larger gears 28,28 which are mounted on short shafts 29, of which but one is shown, projecting through i the respective heads 26 of the drums and carrying at their outer ends and keyed or otherwise suitably held thereon pinions 30 of which but one is shown. The pinions 3O drive larger gears 31, of which but'one is shown, and the gears 31 are journaled upon studs 82 projecting from the outer faces of the heads 26 of the drums 7 and 8. Suitably journaled upon the bearings 4 and 5 and in the brackets 2 and 3 are cylindrical members, referred to above, having laterally extending surfaces or collars arranged at their peripheries, these members being designated respectively 19 and 20. WVithin theirinteriors these members are providedwith internal gears 35, of which but one is shown, with which the'gears 31 mesh,the
gears 35 when stationary constituting reaction gears. The outer peripheries of the collars on which these members 19 and 20 are formed are provided with braking surfaces 36; and suitable brake bands 37 having operating means 38 shown in Fig. 2, are arranged to permit the members 19 and 20 to rotate or to be held stationary at the will of the hoist operator.
From the foregoing description the mode of operation of my invention will be readily apparent. Upon the admission of air through the passage 17, the rotors 14 and 15 will be caused to rotate driving the shaft 21 and accordingly the pinions 22, 22. Let it be assumed that the right hand brake actuating mechanism is operated to hold the member 19 stationary while the left hand mechanism 38 is moved to release the member 20. The pinion 22 driving the pinion 23, the shaft 24, pinion 27, gear 28, right hand shaft 29, right hand pinion 80, and right hand pinion 31 will cause the latter to rotate; and as the member 19 is held stationary, the pinion 31 will travel around the interior periphery of the right hand internal gear 35 and move bodily with it the drum 7. The member 20 being loose will be frely driven by its respective pinion 31 while drum 8 does not rotate. Accordingly, one drum will be positively driven and the other will remain stationary. If, however, it is desired to simultaneously unwind rope from the drum 8 while the drum 7 is being positively driven, this may be accomplished by reason of the fact that bodily movement of the drum 8 will simply cause bodily movement of the gear 31 and accordingly the speed of rotation of the member 20 will be increased in direct proportion to the rate of rotation of the drum 8 as the latter is rotated. It will be understood from the foregoing description that the ropes 39 and 40 are similarly wound upon the drums 8 and 7.
IVhile I have in this application specifically described one form which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that this form of the same is shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
lVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a hoisting mechanism, a stationary motor casing, a motor therein, said casing having cylindrical end portions, drums journaled on said end portions, and operative connections between said drums and said motor to rotate said drums alternatively and including pinions carried by and rotatable with respect to said drums.
2. In a hoisting mechanism, a pair of drums rotatable about alined axes, a driving motor therefor intermediate the remote ends of said drums and having a housing provided with means for journaling said drums directly thereon, said motor comprising motor rotors rotating about axes parallel to the drum axes, and driving connections between said motor and said drums for efiiecting rotation of said drums relative to the motor housing.
3. In a hoisting mechanism, a pair of drums rotatable about alined axes, drum supporting bearing means at the remote and adjacent ends of said drums, a drum driving motor intermediate the remote ends of said drums and comprising power generating rotors rotating about axe pa allel to the drum axes, one of said rotors having a drum driving shaft extending into said drums and through the drum bearing means at said adjacent ends.
l. In a hoisting mechanism, a stationary motor, drums disposed on opposite ends of said motor and carried thereby, and means reby said motor may drive either of said drums independently of the other, including gears constituting traclrways, cooperating gears journaled on the drums constituting drum rotating means, and means for holding said first mentioned gears stationary or permitting them to rotate.
5. In a hoisting mechanism, a stationary motor casing, a motor therein, said casing having cylindrical end portions, relatively rotatable winding drums coaxial with the cylindrical end portions of said casing and journaled thereon, and operative connections between each of said drums and said motor.
6. In a hoisting mechanism, a stationary motor asing providing external cylindrical portions, a motor in said casing, drums having portions concentric with the cylindrical portions of said casing and journaled on said casing, and operative connections between said drums and the opposite ends of said motor.
7. In a hoisting mechanism, a frame comprisin a motor housing and spaced standards, and drums rotatably supported at their opposite ends on said standarts and on said motor housing.
8. In a hoisting mechanism, a frame comprising spaced standards, a motor casing intermediate said standards, and drums journaled in bearings on said casing and by said standards.
9. In a hoisting mechanism, a stationary motor, a pair of alined drums adapted to be driven thereby and journaled at their adjacent ends on said motor, and means including brake controlled reaction gears arranged at the remote ends of said drums and cooperating gears carried by the drums whereby said motor can be caused to drive either of said drums while the other is left free for rotation.

11. In a hoisting mechanism, a stationary motor, drums arranged one at each end of said motor and journaled at their adjacent ends on said motor, said drums having alined rotatably mounted reaction gears mounted adjacent the remote ends of said drums for rotation on an axis in alinement with said drum axes, gears meshing withsaid reaction gears rotatably mounted on said drums for rotation on axes offset from the v drum axes, driving connectionsbetween the motor and said last mentioned gears, and means for controlling the rotation of said reaction gears.

A hoisting mechanism comprising a frame, a stationary motor casing carried thereby, a drum rotatably supported at one of its ends on the periphery thereof, means for supporting the other end of said drum including a standard, an internal gear having a sleeve portion rotatably mounted in said standard, a stub shaft carried by the other end of said drum and supported by said sleeve portion, and reduction gearing cooperating with said motor and said internal gear.
13. A hoisting mechanism comprising a frame, a motor bracket projecting upwardly therefrom at substantially the central portion thereof, amotor carried thereby comprlsing a main housing and end members, said hous ng having a substantial portion overhang ng each end of said bracket, a rope windlng drum disposed at each end of said motor and having a substantial portion surrounding the overhanging portions of said'housmg, means for rotatably supporting said drums, and driving connections between said motor and said drums. 7
14. A hoisting mechanism comprising a a5 frame, a motor bracket projecting upwardly therefrom at substantially the central portion thereof, a motor element carried thereby and having a substantial portion overhanging each end of said bracket, a rope winding drum disposed at each end of said motor and surrounding said overhanging portions, the space between the adjacent ends of said drums being determined substantially by the width of said bracket, means for rotatably supporting said drums, and means for driving one drum from one end of said motor and the other drum from the other end.
15. In a hoisting mechanism, a frame com- 59 prising a motor housing presenting cylindrical bearing surfaces at opposite ends thereof, relatively rotatable winding drums alined with said motor and rotatably supported on said bearing surfaces, and driving connections between said motor and drums for effecting rotation of said drums relative to the motor housing.

19. In a hoisting mechanism, a base frame, a motor supported thereby, a plurality of relative rotatable winding drums, means for V rotatably supporting said drums in relatively close axial relation, driving connections between said motor and each of said drums, and means for controlling rotation of each drum at the will of the operator including controlling levers extending in the same di rection to one side of said drums and directly therefrom, said levers being disposed one at each of the remote ends of adjacent drums whereby an operator may stand behind said hoisting mechanism and simultaneously grasp and operate said levers at will.
20. The combination set forth in claim 19 further characterized in that the driving connections between said motor and drums includes a member at each of the remote ends of adjacent drums, said members being held'stationary during driving of its respective drum LIZ independently driven, and controlling means for effecting said simultaneous or independent drum rotation at the Will of the operator including a pair of manually operable elenents, one for each drum and each extending rearwardly from its respective drum and in a plane substantially adjacent an end thereof whereby an operator may stand behind said hoisting mechanism and simultaneously grasp said manually operable elements to effect the desired drum rotation.
22. The combination set forth in claim 4 further characterized in that said holding means includes toggle operated brake me1nbers one for each of said gear trackways with the operating lever for each brake extending rearwardly whereby an operator may stand behind said hoisting mechanism and simultaneously grasp said levers to operate the drums at will.
