This invention relates to hoists and more particul'arly to improvements" in a double drum scraper hoist especially designed for use in mines. object of the present invention is to provide an improved hoist. Another object is to provide an improved hoist having improved mounting means forthe cable winding drums and improved driving means for the drums. A further object is to provide an improved double drum hoist having relatively rotatable cable winding drums provided with fr-ictionally controlled planetary driving means whereby the drums may be independently driven. A still further object is to provide an improved drive shaft arrangement for a hoist wherein the cable winding drums are journaled on and supported :by the drive shafts. The brake bands 28 have suitable toggle-like operating means 32 whereby the brakes may be independently applied to control the reaction members 26 and 21. Thus when the reaction members are held against rotation by the brake bands, the cable winding drums may be driven in cable winding direction through the gears I9, 20, shaft 6, coupling l3, l4, shaft 1, gears 2|, 22, planet gears 23 and internal gears 25, and by slipping the brake bands, the driving speeds may be varied as desired. The adjacent ends of the drums are engaged by conventional brake bands 33 operated through suitable linkage 34 to brake drum rotation'as desired. 4
In the modification shown in Fig. 2, the central support 5' is made relatively narrow so that the drums may be placed closer together and the adjacent ends of the drums have projecting circular flanges 35 received in annular grooves 36 in the opposite sides of the central support to seal out dirt. The bearings 12 for the adjacent ends of the axially alined shafts 6 and 1 are supportedwithin an enlarged central boss 31 on the central support and this boss extends within the drums in the manner shown. Thus not only is a more compact structure attained, but also an extremely effective dirt seal is provided between the drums and the central support.
From the foregoing, it is evident that the cable winding drums 8 and 9 are supported by and journaled in an improved manner on the end supports 3, 4 and the central support 5, and the drive shafting 6, l on which the drums are journaled is not only supported at its ends but also near its center. By'removing the outer end support 4 from the base frame, the right-hand drum unit, asviewed in Fig. 1, may be detached from the rest of the hoist, and the shaftlof the right-hand drum unit when moved outwardly is readily released from the coupling ring I3 without disturbing the latter. As shown in Fig, 6,
' by a slight modification of the base tomake the latter shorter and the provision of a detachable end cap 38 for the outer side of the then end support 5, the hoist may be readily transformed into a single drum hoist. Also by enabling such manner of detachment of the right-hand drum unit, assembly or dismantling of the hoist is facilitated. w
In the modified embodiment shown in Fig. 7, the end and central supports for the axially alined drum drive shafts, and the releasable coupling between the axially alined shafts may be similar to those of Fig. 1. In this construction however, spur drive gears 2| and 22. are keyed tothe alined shafts 6 and .1 near the central support 5 and mesh with planet gears 23 journaled onshafts 24' at the adjacent ends of the drums. The planet gears mesh with internal. gears 25' formed on reaction members 40and 4| controlled bybrake bands 28. The hubs 42 of the reaction members are journaled in-bearings 43 supported withinthe central support, and the hubs 42 carry bearings I2 in which the adjacent ends of the alined shafts are journaled. Brake bands 33' are arranged at the remote ends of the drums near the end supports for braking drum rotation.
In the modification shown in Fig. 8, the central support 5" has circular bosses 44 projecting from its opposite sides and supporting therein the bearings in which the adjacent ends of the axially alined shafts 6 and I are journaled. Supported by these circular bosses 44 externally thereof are bearings 43' on which the hubs 45 of the reaction members 40' and 4| are journaled. By

In the several embodiments and modifications above described, the motor 5! drives the axially alined shafts which carry the cable winding drums and the shafts are releasably coupled for When the reaction members are held against rotation by the brake bands, the drums may be driven through the spur gears on the shafts, the planet gears and the internal gears on the reaction members, and by slipping the brake bands which control rotation of the reaction members, the driving speeds may be varied at will. The drum shafts are not only journaled in the upstanding end supports but also in the upstandin central support arranged between the drums, thereby resulting in a more stable structure. By the provision of the releasable coupling between the alined shafts, one drum unit may be readily detached from the hoist without disturbing the mounting for the other drum. The reaction members which control drum rotation are journaled in certain of the upstanding supports on the base frame independently of the axially alined drive shafts which support the drums. The manners of use and other advantages of the improved hoist will be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art.
While there are in this application specifically described several forms and modifications thereof which the invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that these embodiments and modifications of the same are shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be further modified and embodied in various other forms Without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: i
1. In a hoist, a frame having end supports and a central support, a motor carried by said frame at one end thereof, shafts driven by said motor and arranged in axial alinement and journaled at their remote ends in said end supports and at their adjacent ends in said central support, a releasable coupling arranged in said central sup port for connecting said axially alined shafts together, relatively rotatable cable winding drums arranged between said end supports and said central support at the opposite sides of the latter and journaled on and supported by said axially alined shafts respectively, and driving connections between said shafts respectively and'said drums for independent1yrotatingthe latter in cable winding direction, said releasable coupling permitting removal of one drum, its shaft and driving connections without disturbing the central support or the other drum, its shaft and driving connections and while the shaft of said other drum remains journaled in said central support. 9. In a hoist, a frame, a pair of coaxial cable means, said sup-porting means including a support between said drums andsaid driving means including driving elements for each unit having a bearing mounting in said support, and a releasable coupling between the driving elements of the two units whereby one unit may be removed axially from said supporting means without disturbing the other unit, its drive, or the bearing mounting of its driving element in said support.
10. In a hoist, a frame having end supports and a central supportya pair of coaxial cable winding drum units arranged betweensaid supports and supported thereby'and each having driving means, said units being supported at their remote ends by said end supports and at their adjacent ends by said central support and an element of the driving meansof each unit having a, bearing mounting in said central support, and
a releasable coupling; arranged within said central support for connecting the driving elements of the two units together whereby the driving means of one unit may be driven through the driving means for the other unit, and said coupling permitting removal of. one unit without disturbing said other unit, its drive, or the bearing mounting of its driving element in said central support;

In a, hoist, a frame having end supports and a central support, axially aligned shafts journaled in said supports, relatively rotatable cable winding drums arranged between said end supports and said central support at opposite sides of the latter and journaled on and wholly supported'by said shafts, bearings supported by said central support in which the adjacent ends of said shafts are journaled, bearings supported by said centralsupport externally of-said shaftbearings, and driving connections between said shafts respectively and said drums for independently driving the latter in cable winding direction, and including reaction members journaled tions between said shafts respectively and said drums independently driving the latter in cable winding direction, and including reaction meni=- bers journaled on said last mentioned bearings. 13. In a hoist, a frame having end supports and a central support, sh-afting journaled in said supports, relatively rotatable cable winding drums arranged between said (and supports and said central support at opposite sides of the latter and journaled on and supported wholly by said shafting, said central support having circular projecting bosses at its opposite sides, bearings supported within said bosses in which the central portion of said shafting is journaled, bearings supported by said bosses externally thereof, and driving connections between said shafting and said drums for independently driving the latter in cable windin direction, and including reaction members journaled on said last mentioned bearings.
