Abstract

664,789. Boring-heads. SMITH, J. T., and BURROWS, J. D. April 11, 1950 [May 17, 1949], No. 13131/49. Class 83 (iii). A boring-head for attachment to, or forming part of, a boring-machine comprises a shaft 4 carrying a cutting-tool 5 and a rigid rotatable pilot roller 6 disposed on bushes 9, 10 located behind the tool. The roller is grooved at 11 to register with a gap 12 between the bushes, and cooling medium, e.g. air or liquid, is supplied through passages 13, 14 or 12<SP>1</SP>, 15 or 16 to the interior of the roller and thence through holes 17 in the roller to the cutting-edges of the tool. Further small holes 18 in the roller serve to conduct cooling medium to the washer 7. The outer surface of the roller is provided with axial channels for the removal of swarf. A thrust washer 7 is arranged between the roller and a flange 3 on the boring-head, and a washer 8 for retaining the roller is held against axial forward movement by the tool.
