Abstract

789,176. Drilling long holes. BISSEY, P. J. April 21, 1955 [April 23, 1954], No. 11505/55. Class 83 (3). A tube-boring machine comprises a hollow-spindle 3 to support the work 12 and a rotating tool-shaft 1 passing through the spindle. The spindle 3 is rotated by a gear 7 in a headstock 4 and carries the work 12 in a chuck 9. A belt-drive 21 rotates a cylinder 17 keyed at 20 to the shaft 1 which carries a piston 16 operated by fluid supplied by a line 24 and exhausted through passages 29, 28. The fluid is similar to cutting-fluid supplied by a line 32, so that leakage past the key 20 is unimportant. The tool is guided into the work by a bushing 36. The cutting-fluid flows through grooves in a spindle liner f, and through the work with the cuttings to a container B. The pressure of the cutting- fluid on the tool-head assists in preventing buckling of the shaft. In a modification, the tool is pulled, instead of pushed, through the work. In a further modification, the cutting- fluid entering through a line 32, Fig. 2, carries the cuttings back through the tool-shaft 43 to a cooled sump 39. The shaft is fed by a carriage 40.
