Abstract
664,705. Separation of gases. BRITISH OXYGEN CO., Ltd., and SCHUFTAN, P. M. May 30, 1950 [June 3, 1949], No. 14941/49. Class 8 (ii) In a process for separating a gas mixture, e.g., air into its constituents product oxygen and waste nitrogen by liquefaction and rectification wherein at least part of the cold required is obtained from isentropic expansion of at least part of the initial mixture or of at least one of its separated constituents e.g., waste nitrogen the liberated energy is utilized to reduce below atmospheric the pressure of one of the separated constituents, e.g., waste nitrogen The expansion may be effected by a turbine and the energy used to drive a directly coupled axial flow blower drawing waste nitrogen which supplies a vacuum brake for the turbine rotor. In a modification the expansion occurs in a reciprocating engine having an extra cylinder acting as a vacuum brake and serving to bring about the desired pressure reduction of the waste nitrogen.
