594,958. Separating gases by liquefaction. LINDE AIR PRODUCTS CO. Sept. 26, 1944, No. 18410. Convention. date, Aug. 28, 1943. [Class 8 (ii)] Oxygen &c. is separated from air &c. in a rectifier and cooled to produce sub-cooled liquid oxygen in an interchanger 51 traversed by a nitrogen. product of the rectification, solid impurities being removed by filtration; it is then pumped by a pump C<1>, in liquid form, to a pressure say of 2,000 lb. per sq. in., and delivered to an interchanger 11 where it is vaporized for delivery to a receiver or consumer. The cooling medium for interchanger 51 may be nitrogenous liquid from the first rectifying stage expanded before passing through the interchanger to the second stage ; hydrocarbons may be removed by a filter 34 from the liquid before pumping. The process may be regulated by control of the amount of cooling medium traversing the first interchanger or by byepassing a stage of the rotary pump shown ; the nitrogen from the second stage is also heated to atmospheric temperature in the final interchanger. In a modification, the nitrogen from the second stage sub-cools the oxygen, and a reciprocating pump is used followed by a second filtration to remove by dissolving and fragments of pump-packing : a controlled part of the pumped oxygen may be returned to the second rectification stage.
