Abstract

1532334 Separating gases ORTLOFF CORP 20 April 1977 [ 9 Aug 1976 4 Oct 1976] 16398/77 Heading F4P In a process for obtaining a volatile gas stream 52 and a less volatile fraction 53 from a compressed mixture of mainly methane and ethane, the mixture is partly condensed by cooling in exchangers 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 57, the liquid fraction 34 being expanded at 56 and fed via line 55a to a fractionation column 19, and at least some 51 of the gas fraction is re-warmed at 57 before being work-expanded at 17 and fed via line 51b below line 55a into column 19. The re-warming enables more work and refrigeration to be extracted by expander 17. Some 50 of the gas fraction is added to the liquid fraction 34 which is sub-coded at 54 by gas stream 52 before expansion.
