Abstract
1532336 Separating gases ORTLOFF CORP 20 April 1977 [21 June 1976 9 Aug 1976 4 Oct 1976] 16420/77 Heading F4P In a process for separating a gas mixture comprising methane and ethane into a volatile gas and a less volatile fraction in which the compressed gas is at least partially liquefied by cooling at 10-15 to give a liquid portion 24 which is then expanded at 42 and fed to a fractionation column 19, the liquid portion 24 is further cooled in exchanger 41 before expansion. The effect is to produce a colder zone and a different temperature distribution in column 19 with the result that less ethane is entrained in the mainly methane overhead gas 46. Liquid portion 24 is obtained from a separator 16 whose gas overhead is work expanded at 17 and fed, with the expanded liquid 43, to a separator 50, the liquid from which is partly fed to column 19 and partly used to cool the exchanger 41 then fed to column 19. The feed gas may be completely liquefied by coolers 10-15, Fig. 4 (not shown) or separator 50 may be omitted, Fig. 5 (not shown). The further cooling prior to expansion may be effected by a portion of the liquid after expansion, Figs. 10 and 11 (not shown), a fraction from column 19, Fig. 7 (not shown) or the gas overhead from column 19, Figs. 8, 12 (not shown). The liquid portion from separator 16 may be divided into two streams which are then expanded separately, Figs. 10, 11 (not shown).
