Abstract

663,985. Surface condensers. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. July 14, 1950 [July 22, 1949], No. 19370/49. Class 64(iii) Air vented from auxiliary apparatus of steam plant is admitted into the shell 1 of a surface condenser near its top, at inlet 4, and is forced to travel in an enclosed passage or passages 5, 7 within the condenser towards the air de-vaporizing and cooling zone 3 of the condenser substantially without coming into contact with the condensing tubes 2. In the form shown, the passage is formed by three-sided channels attached to the shell 1 and top of the baffle 6. The inlet 9 to the passage is flared to catch incoming exhaust steam to produce an ejector effect on air entering through the inlet 4. In a modification, the channel 5 is extruded further down along the inner wall of the shell 1, and opens directly into the air devaporizing and cooling zone.
