Abstract

663,822. Metal-vapour discharge apparatus. TRIGNITRON AKTIEBOLAG. June 9, 1947 [Nov. 7, 1940], No. 15136/47. Class 39 (i). [Also in Group XL (c)] A method of generating damped oscillating electric currents comprises discharging a condenser, connected in a high-frequency oscillatory circuit, through a metal vapour discharge tube comprising two liquid electrodes and at least one and preferably two starting electrodes. The electrodes d, e are of mercury and the starting electrodes g, h, j, m, n may be inside or outside the tube, Figs. 2, 4. An internal or external control electrode h, q may be provided; it is made negative at the end of a conducting cycle to assist deionization in the non-conducting periods, and the negative potential is removed at the commencement of the next conducting period. The envelope is U-shaped and may contain a gas at low pressure in addition to the mercury vapour. Cooling means may be provided to further assist deionization. A prior art arrangement utilizing two devices each having a mercury cathode, a metal or carbon plate as anode, and a single internal ignition electrode, and connected up in parallel in opposite senses, is referred to.
