Abstract

Aromatic sulphonyl chlorides react with alkyl hydroxy compounds to give the alkyl sulphonic esters in presence of caustic alkali of 35-50 per cent aqueous solution at temperatures from 20 DEG to 100 DEG C., in at least 200 per cent excess on the sulphonyl chloride. The products are plasticizing or alkylating agents. In examples, methylbenzenesulphonate, ethylene glycol dibenzenesulphonate, n-propyl benzenesulphonate, propylene glycol dibenzenesulphonate, 2 - ethyl - hexylbenzenesulphonate and ethyl b -naphthalenesulphonate are prepared by this process, and mixtures of ethylene and propylene glycol dibenzenesulphonates may be obtained similarly.
