Abstract
New linear polycarbonates soluble in organic solvents and aqueous alkali solution contain the residues of organic dihydroxy compounds with carboxylic or sulphonic acid groups and side chains. They are made by reacting organic dihydroxy compounds containing such acid groups, if desired in admixture with other organic dihydroxy compounds, with bis-halocarbonic esters of organic dihydroxy compounds or phosgene. Specified dihydroxy compounds containing acid groups are tartaric acid, dihydroxy stearic acid, 2,5-dihydroxy-cyclohexane carboxylic acid, 4,41-dihydroxy-dicyclohexyl - dicarboxylic acid - (2,21), 2,6 - dihydroxy benzoic acid, 3,6-dihydroxybenzenedicarboxylic acid-(1,2), 4,41-dihydroxydiphenyldicarboxylic acid-(2,21), 4,41-dihydroxy-3,31-dicarboxy - diphenyl - methane, 4,41 - dihydroxy - 3,31 - dicarboxy - 5,51 - di -methyl - diphenylmethane, 1,4 - dihydroxybenzene - sulphonic acid-(2), 1,6-dihydroxy-naphthalenesulphonic acid-(3) and 4,41-dihydroxy-diphenyldisulphonic acid-(2,21). Specified other dihydroxy compounds are ethylene glycol, di- and tri-ethylene glycol, butanediol-1,4, 1,4-dihydroxycyclohexane, 2,2 - (4,41 - dihydroxydicyclohexyl) - propane, p - hydroxybenzyl alcohol, hydroquinone, resorcinol, 4,41 - dihydroxy - diphenyl, 2,6 - dihydroxy - naphthalene, 4,41 - dihydroxy - diphenyl - methane, 2,2 - (4,41 - dihydroxydiphenyl) - propane and 4,41 - dihydroxydiphenyl sulphone. The polycarbonates are soluble in acetone, tetrahydrofurane, dioxan, dimethyl formamide, aqueous methanol, aqueous ethanol and mixtures of benzene and methanol or ethanol, and also in aqueous solutions of sodium and potassium hydroxide and sodium carbonate. Films and coatings may be made from these solutions. Examples describe the making of polycarbonate from (1) 4,41-dihydroxy-3,31-dimethyl-5, 51-dicarboxydiphenyl-methane and phosgene; (2) 2,2 - (4,41 - dihydroxyphenyl) - propane - bis - chlorcarbonic acid ester and 4,41-dihydroxy-3,31 - dicarboxy - 5,51 - dimethyl - diphenylmethane; (3) 2,2-(4,41-dihydroxy-diphenyl)-propane - 3,31 - disulphonic acid, 2,2 - (4,41-dihydroxydiphenyl) - propane and phosgene.
