Abstract

New thermoplastic polycarbonates contain the residues of dihydroxy-diaryl sulphoxides and if desired of other dihydroxy compounds. They may be made by reacting dihydroxydiaryl-sulphoxides or mixtures thereof and other dihydroxy compounds with (a) diesters of carbonic acid, (b) phosgene or (c) dichlorocarbonic acid esters of dihydroxy-diaryl-sulphoxides and/or of ether dihydroxy compounds. Specified sulphoxides are 4,41-dihydroxy-diphenyl-sulphoxide and its 2,21-dimethyl- and 3,31-dimethyl homologues. The polycarbonates are soluble in methylene chloride, chloroform, cyclohexanone, dioxane, phenol and dimethyl formamide and are useful in the manufacture of mouldings, coatings, films, foils and lacquers. In examples, phosgene is passed into a solution of 4,41 - dihydroxy - diphenyl - sulphoxide (or a mixture thereof with 2,2-(4,41-dihydroxydiphenyl)-propane) in sodium hydroxide solution and methylene chloride. Then triethylamine and sodium isopropyl-naphthalene-sulphonate are added and the resulting paste washed and dried to yield a polycarbonate. Specification 808,485 is referred to.
