Abstract

Polycarbonates useful for the manufacture of fibres, films or lacquers, are made by reacting N : N1-carbonyl-di-imidazole with a 4:41-dihydroxy diphenyl alkane (e.g. 4:41-dihydroxy diphenyl 2:2-propane or butane). Reaction may be effected in a solution of dioxane or in the melt phase and the polycarbonate may be recovered from the reaction mixture by dissolving the latter in methylene chloride, precipitating the imidazole with sulphuric acid and then removing the methylene chloride. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 772,627.
