Abstract

Filamentary materials or films of thermoplastic polycarbonates of high molecular weight are made by stretching a crystallisable polycarbonate in the form of a filamentary material or film at or above the conversion temperature and below the melting point of the polycarbonate. Stretching is preferably carried out at 20-30 DEG C., above the conversion temperature, which is defined as the point of intersection of the two linear parts of the refractive index-temperature curve. Suitable polycarbonates include those derivable from 1, 1-(4, 41-dihydroxydiphenyl) ethane, -butane, -isobutane, and -cyclohexane, and from 2, 2-(4, 41-dihydroxydiphenyl)-propane and -butane, all of which have conversion temperatures within the range 123-170 DEG C. Polycarbonates derivable from 2, 2-(4, 41 dihydroxydiphenyl) pentane, 2, 2-(4, 41-dihydroxydicresyl) propane, and from mixtures of 2, 2-(4, 41-dihydroxydiphenyl)-propane and 4, 41-dihydroxy diphenyl methane; 2, 2-(4, 41-dihydroxydiphenyl)-propane and 1, 1-(4, 41-dihydroxydiphenyl)-cyclohexane; 2, 2-(4, 41-dihydroxydiphenyl)-propane and 2, 6-dihydroxynaphthalene; 2, 2-(4, 41-dihydroxydiphenyl)-propane and 4, 41-dihydroxydiphenyl; 2, 2-(4, 41-dihydroxydiphenyl) propane and hydroquin one; 2, 2-(4, 41-dihydroxydiphenyl)-propane and xylylene glycol; 2, 2-(4, 41-dihydroxydiphenyl)propane and 2, 2-(4, 41-dihydroxydicyclohexyl)propane; and polycarbonates derivable from 4, 41-dihydroxydiphenylsulphone, 4, 41-dihydroxydiphenyl sulphoxide, 4, 41 dihydroxydiphenyl ether and 4, 41-dihydroxydiphenyl sulphide may also be used.
