Abstract
662,398. Vehicle undercarriages. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.-GES. Oct. 1, 1949 [Nov. 2. 1948], No. 25283/49. Class 108(ii) The main spring masses of a motor vehicle, e.g. engine. petrol tank, spare wheel, are offset from the centre-line of the vehicle in such a way as to cause the vehicle, when empty to lean away from the driving side, and to lean in the opposite direction when occupied by the driver only. The distance of the centre of gravity from the centreline is preferably so arranged that the tilting movement about the centre-line caused by the weight of the empty vehicle is approximately half that caused by the weight of the driver. Fig. 3 represents empty vehicle with its centre of gravity offset whereby the weight of the vehicle G causes the body to tilt by an angle # away from the driver's side, with the preferred arrangement mentioned above. when the driver occupies the left-hand side, the body tilts by an angle # in the opposite direction, and when one passenger is also present next to the driver the tilt is # in the original direction as shown in Fig. 3. With a vehicle which is level when empty, entry of the driver would cause a tilt of 2 #.
