In a motor vehicle 1 having the engine (not shown) at the rear and independently suspended steerable front wheels 3, a fuel tank 10 of a flat and somewhat square shape is mounted at the front of the vehicle to one side of the steering column 8 and steering gear 6 at the height of the normal positions of the wheel axles. As shown the fuel tank 10 having a filler opening 12 is disposed below a spare wheel 11.
