Abstract

662,336. Change-speed gear; positive clutches; operating clutches. BLAKE, W. H. (Sotecom. Soc. Anon.). Jan. 13, 1949, No. 979/49. Class 80 (ii) The transmission of a vehicle, especially of a motor cycle, comprises constant mesh gearing having no neutral position and changeable without declutching by virtue of a one-way coupling on the low gear train and meshing devices connecting the gears with their driving shaft on the other gear trains, and a clutch constituting the only mechanical interruption between the engine and wheels. A gear wheel 3 driven by a member 1 is connected to a main shaft 4 by a multi-disc clutch comprising discs 5, 6 keyed to a driving part 9, discs 10 keyed to the shaft 4 and loading springs 13, a lever 17 having a disengagement maintaining sprag 26 and stop 27 controlling the clutch by axially moving the gear wheel 3 through a flexible cable 24, lever 22, member 18 and a ball thrust bearing 21. The low gear train (shown engaged) comprises gears 33, 32, jamming rollers 28 of a one-way coupling, an auxiliary shaft 29, gears 35, 36, and an output chain sprocket 2. Movement to the left of a member 43 moves balls 38 against a retaining spring 42 radially into gear housings 40 to effect medium gear through gears 41, 44, the shaft 29 overrunning the gear 32. Movement to the right of the member 43 permits withdrawal of balls 38 and causes balls 45 to effect direct drive through a gear hub 37. A catch 55 loaded by an annular spring 56 locates the gear positions. A kick starter (not shown) on a shaft 59 drives the engine through rollers 60 of another one-way coupling and gears 58, 57. Ratchet pawls and wheels may replace the form of one-way couplings shown.
