Abstract

661,227. Container closures. MAGNESEN, C. D. March 8, 1949, No. 6269/49. Classes 66 and 125(iii) A container 10 for paint and the like has a cylindrical top 14 of smaller diameter than the container with a tapered throat 22 and a groove 41 about the neck of the top and spaced from the open end, the closure 30 for the container has a circular groove 33 which contains a compressible gasket G and receives the neck of the container, a plurality of depending fingers 34 which extend below the edge of the neck and terminate in curled-over edges 38, and a retaining ring 40 which has a beaded lower edge 42 and fastens the edges 38 of the fingers 34 into the grooves 41 of the container to form the seal. The closure member 30 is so constructed that in the sealing position it is flexed outwardly and when the retaining ring is removed is flexed inwardly to release the fingers 34, and means are provided to prevent complete compressing of the gasket comprising a plurality of shoulders 56 having flat upper surfaces positioned around the container neck which abut the edge 42 of the retainer ring to limit the downward movement of this ring, thus permitting stacking of the containers without excessive compression of the gasket. The container may be fitted with a bail. Ridges 36 on the fingers 34 are distorted when the ring 40 is positioned and force the surface 31 of the closure outwardly into an arcuate bulge. The means limiting the movement of the ring may comprise a plurality of equally spaced ledge embossments struck outwardly from the neck of the container.
