A pivoted-tongue buckle is provided with a shield 8, which is hinged at the front end 3 of the buckle frame and is pressed over to cover the free end of the tongue 4 by the action of the belt 6 on a rearwardly directed closing arm 9 of said shield 8. The member 8, 9, which is substantially L-shaped and of sheet metal, may be attached to the buckle by legs 10, Fig. 3, cut from the material of the arm 9 and bent round the outer cross bar 3, the buckle frame being formed from a single piece of wire; alternatively, Fig. 6, apertured lugs 10' projecting down from the ends of the arm 8 may receive a separate, wire cross bar 3, the ends of which then pass through holes in the limbs 2 of a U- shaped wire member before being riveted over. In a modification, Fig. 10, the outer cross bar of the buckle is constituted by part of the arm 9, an extension 13 thereof being bent inwards and then over at right angles to form a ledge 14 for the tongue 4 to rest on, the outer ends of the ledge 14 which project beyond the member 8, 9, being rotatable in holes in the limbs 2 of a U-shaped frame. The frames may be stamped from sheet metal.
