Abstract

661,115. Vehicle bodies. BUDD CO. Oct. 5, 1948, [Oct. 24, 1947] No. 25938/48. Class 103(iv). A vehicle body includes a side wall having a plurality of vertical frame members secured to and upstanding from longitudinal side sills and spaced from each other in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle and a shear panel formed on its outside with horizontally arranged nodes or corrugations spaced apart in a vertical direction a distance greater than the individual width thereof, said panel being secured by the portions between the nodes to the outside of the frame members. Each side wall comprises sills 10 each having attached thereto a, flanged member 11 and a strip 12, secured to the ends of the posts 13, which below windows 14 are connected by chord members 15, 16 and an outer moulding 17. A moulding 19 is secured to the sill 10 which is further enclosed by a fairing panel 21. A shear panel 22 is connected to the outer surfaces of the posts 13, the plate 12, the flanges 18 of the moulding 17 and the flange 20 of the moulding 19. To increase the shear resistance and external appearance of each panel 22, nodes 24 are formed therein. In an alternative construction additional fluted panels 27, Fig. 3, may be secured to the nodes 24 by screws 29 which are enclosed by a capping strip 30. In a modified construction the panels 27 may be secured to the panels 22 intermediate the nodes 24.
