In a mining machine of the chain-cutter type the arm 10 which extends within and forms a support for the cutter jib 11 is stepped at 13 so that the outer portion 10a of the arm has a smaller cross sectional area than the inner portion 10b. The jib contacts the arm 14 and 15 so leaving a cavity 16 between the two members.
