Abstract
660,714. Friction clutches. ELECTROLUX, Ltd. (Aktiebolaget Elektrolux). May 5, 1949, No. 12016/49. Class 80 (ii) [Also in Groups II and VIII] A friction clutch for a household machine (see Groups II and VIII) comprises a disc 29 secured to a motor shaft and an element 37 in the form of a brush which frictionally engages the surface of the disc 29. The element 37 is keyed to the driven shaft by prongs 42 so that it is axially slidable thereon and is urged into contact with the disc 29 bv a spring 36. A ring 44 is supported from a plate 17 on pillars 45 and is positioned so that when it is moved upwardly it engages a brake ring 40a which is secured to the underside of element 37; continued upward movement of the ring 44 moves the element 37 out of contact with disc 29 and simultaneously brakes the rotation of the driven shaft. The ring 44 is urged downwardly by springs 47 and is moved through a system of rods and levers by a hand lever which is so interlocked with a lid of the machine that the clutch can only be engaged to drive the driven shaft when the lid is closed. In an alternative construction the element 37 is moved by a lever which engages a collar, above and integral with the element; in this case no braking ring is used.
