Abstract
Solid hydroxylamine sulphate is prepared by subjecting a solution of the salt in dilute sulphuric acid, obtained by hydrolyzing hydroxylamine disulphonates of alkaline earth metals, to concentration and precipitating the hydroxylamine sulphate by adding a liquid which is miscible with sulphuric acid but which does not easily dissolve hydroxylamine sulphate e.g. aliphatic alcohols or dioxan. Solutions of calcium nitrate and calcium bisulphate are mixed with stirring at up to 10 DEG C and the mixture saturated with sulphur dioxide to pH.3.6. The solution of calcium hydroxylamine disulphonate formed is hydrolyzed by heating to 80 DEG C for 1 hour and the calcium sulphate precipitate is filtered off. The filtrate is concentrated in vacuo at 30 DEG -40 DEG C, and any further calcium sulphate precipitated is filtered off, then further concentrated at 40 DEG -60 DEG C. The concentrate is either treated directly with denatured alcohol to precipitate the hydroxylamine sulphate or subjected to preliminary cooling to crystallize some of the salt.
