Abstract

A process for obtaining ammonium sulphate from sodium sulphate minerals, with simultaneous obtaining of sodium carbonate, essentially comprising a preliminary phase of disintegration of the mineral and obtaining a saturated solution of sodium sulfate. A first phase, then, in which ammonia and carbon dioxide are whisked into the sodium sulphate solution, obtaining a precipitate of sodium bicarbonate and a mother liquor containing sodium sulfate, ammonium sulfate, sodium bicarbonate, ammonium bicarbonate, sodium carbonate and ammonium carbonate. A second phase of separation of the sodium bicarbonate precipitated with a hydroextractor or filter and simultaneous washing with saturated solution of sodium bicarbonate, which, in a second stage of this same phase is calcined into sodium carbonate, with use of the carbon dioxide released and return to the first phase. A third phase in which sulphate-containing mother liquors are treated with sulfuric acid to neutralize the carbonates and bicarbonates, transforming them into sulfates, stirring for the duration of the acid addition. A fourth phase of cooling below zero degrees precipitating glauber's salt which is separated by centrifugation and used in the previous phase to obtain sodium sulphate solutions. Then follows a fifth phase in which the mother liquors, coming from the previous phase, rich in ammonium sulphate, are subjected to evaporation until the precipitation of sodium sulphate in solution begins, separated then the mother liquor of the obtained ammonium sulphate, centrifuging it with a hydroextractor. Said mother liquor containing ammonium sulfate and sodium sulfate are added to certain amounts of mother liquor from the reaction of the third phase, after acidification with sulfuric acid to enter the fourth cooling phase.
