Abstract

Acid amino compounds which are diazotizable and of low solubility in water, and of which the diazo compound is of an acidity greater than that of nitrous acid, are diazotized by dispersing the amino compound in an aqueous liquid containing at least an equivalent amount of a salt of nitrous acid, and initiating the reaction by adding an amount considerably less than the equivalent (e.g. less than 2 mol. per cent) of an acid which is capable of liberating nitrous acid from its salts and which does not form an insoluble substance with either the amino compound or the diazo compound to be prepared. In examples: (1) 6-methyl-2-aminophenol-4-sulphonic acid is stirred with an aqueous solution of sodium nitrite, and fluoboric acid is added, producing a precipitate of the sodium salt of the diazo compound; (2) the sodium nitrite in (1) is replaced by silver nitrite yielding the silver salt of the diazo compound; (3) nitric acid is added to a suspension of 2-aminophenol-4-sulphonic acid in an aqueous solution of sodium nitrite; (4) hydrochloric acid is added to a suspension of 1-amino-2-naphthol-4-carboxylic acid in an aqueous solution of sodium nitrite.
