Abstract

Solutions of copper salts of propionic, chloracetic, glycollic, and pyruvic acids free from extraneous ions are prepared by adding cupric hydroxide to an aqueous solution of the appropriate acid, diluting the slurry so formed, and clearing with an additional quantity of the acid. Copper pyruvate decomposes on standing with evolution of a gas, producing a suspension. A solution of copper trifluoroacetate was similarly prepared but no attempt was made to dissolve a small amount of undissolved cupric hydroxide. Copper glycinate solution is prepared by adding cupric hydroxide to an aqueous solution of glycine, diluting the slurry, and adding a few drops of concentrated hydrochloric acid to clear the solution. Suspensions containing cupric salts of malonic, a :a 1-oxydiacetic, or acetylsalicylic acid or copper formate are formed by adding commercial basic copper carbonate to aqueous solutions of the appropriate acid and heating gently to drive off carbon dioxide. A solution of silver acetate is formed by slowly adding 10% acetic acid to a brown precipitate of silver oxide formed by adding aqueous sodium hydroxide solution to an aqueous silver nitrate solution.
