Abstract
659,531. Pneumatic separators. CAMPBELL, J. G. June 14, 1949, No. 15816. [Class 117] In an apparatus for sorting small particles according to size, the particles are fed into an air or gas stream to be suspended therein and projected therewith into an expanding flow collecting chamber 8 comprising a plurality of spaced collectors 9. As shown, the particles are fed from a conical hopper 6 having a cam-operated reciprocating release valve 6d, into a two-part venturi tube 5a, 5b, the divergent portion 5b of which is rotated by a motor 7b and coupled to a beater 7 which breaks up any aggregates. The beater 7 comprises a double conical tube having four radial interior vanes 7a arranged to leave an unobstructed axial bore, and containing balls or large metal particles (not shown) to assist in the breaking up process. The outflow end of the beater is connected, so as to form a second venturi, to a conical or wedge-shaped collecting chamber 8 in which the particles are discharged to fall in a cascade into the spaced collecting funnels 9, the apertures of the funnels 9 increasing in size as the chamber 8 diverges. The outlet of the chamber 8 contains a filter bag 11 to separate the particles still in suspension from the air. The filtered air is then recycled through the apparatus via a pipe 13, having cock and flow meter connections 18, 19, a circulating pump 1, a drying tower 3, and in air flow control tube 4.
