Abstract
1,041,120. Drying apparatus. FLUID ENERGY PROCESSING & EQUIPMENT CO. Dec. 18,1964 [Jan. 2, 1964], No. 51575/64. Heading F4G. [Also in Divisions B1 and B2] Apparatus 10 for grinding and drying solid particles comprises a first chamber 14 having a solid particle inlet 40 and a fluid inlet leading into it, tangentially arranged to direct fluid streams against each other to form a vortex, a second chamber 22 connected to the first having a second fluid inlet including nozzles 48 similarly arranged to form a vortex, means 24 to centrifugally separate particles from the vortex fluid, and means 28, 30 to collect the particles. As described, the fluid inlet to the first chamber 14 comprises an annular manifold 32 having tangential nozzles 34, and particle feed is effected by fluid pressure through a duct 43, or e.g. by a screw feeder. In operation, silica gel to be ground and dehydrated is fed into the chamber 14 and impacted in a vortex of superheated steam. The particles rise in the chamber 14 and during their travel through a chamber 12 the steam temperature drops; steam being withdrawn via a duct 50. The particles are then carried into an annular passage 16 and via a chamber 18 into the chamber 22, in which very hot low-pressure air is injected via the inlets 48 to dry the particles. Light dry particles are drawn down into the separating chamber 24. Residual steam and air are withdrawn via a duct 52, and the dry particles removed through a valve 30. A bleeder valve 56 destroys the vortex entering the chamber 28 via an opening 26 and any returning particles are collected in a bag 58. Exhaust ducts 50, 52 may be terminated in filter bags, or a single bag, and the duct may include an exhaust fan to prevent steam flowing back into the chamber 22.
