Abstract

658,476. Stuffing - box substitutes. THORNTON, A. A. (Falk Corporation). Oct. 24, 1949, No. 27251. [Class 122(v)] A seal for preventing liquid escaping between the bottom 13 of a housing and a rotary shaft 11 passing therethrough comprises a stationary part 22 having an annular channel 30 for intercepting the escaping liquid and an annular liquid retaining well. 31 separate from the channel, and a co-operating rotary part 23 having spaced circular baffles 35, 34 making sealing contact. with the liquid in the channel and in the well respectively. The latter liquid 32 which is preferably mercury, traps a quantity of air within an annular chamber 38. The air maintains a pressure on the surface of the liquid in the channel 30 to prevent overflowing. The seal is preferably used in a gear box filled with oil and is effective when the box is tilted or inverted.
