Abstract

1,032,410. Shaft seals. RICHARDSONS, WESTGARTH & CO. Ltd. July 24, 1962 [April 24, 1961], No. 14762/61. Heading F2B. Sealing means for the rotary shaft 1 where it extends through the casing wall 2 of a carbondioxide compressor comprises a wind-back screw seal 9 communicating at one end with a first chamber 7 which adjoins a shaft bearing 5 and houses an axially-displaceable non-rotatable ring 11 urged by springs 12 towards a shoulder 10 on the shaft and communicating at the other end with a second chamber 22 connected by a drainage duet 26 to a drain container 27 maintained at superatmospheric pressure, sealing oil, being supplied to the first chamber 7 at a selected pressure above the pressure of the carbondioxide gas in the space 4 within the casing and sealing oil leaking into the second chamber 22 being drained therefrom into the container 27. The sealing oil, some of which acts as a lubricant for the bearing 5, is supplied to the chamber 7 via a passage 6 and has its pressure controlled by a device 8. The ring 11 is sealed to the chamber 7 by a piston-ring 14. The seal 9 comprises multi-start helical grooves in the casing 2 opposing a cylindrical surface on the shoulder 10. The container 27 is vented via a throttling restriction 30 and the oil level in the container is controlled either by a discharge restriction 28 or by a valve 29. When the shaft is at rest or rotating at a low speed, the ring 11 is urged by the springs 12 into sealing contact with the shoulder 10. In operation under normal running conditions, a gap 15 is formed between the faces 13 and 16 by the oil pressure and an oil/gas interface occurs at an axial position along the seal 9. Any oil leaking past the seal 9 is thrown outwardly by a baffle 24 into the chamber 22 and drained into the container 27. A labyrinth seal 25 is provided between the space 4 and the chamber 22. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the sealing oil is supplied to the chamber 7 through passages in the ring 11.
