[Classes 106 (i) and 106 (iii)] A turnstile comprising a counter 13 enclosed in a casing 14, which can be sealed, a driving shaft 30 projecting from the casing and connected to the turnstile arms, and a non- reversible driving connection 40, 44 within the casing between said driving shaft and the counter so that the setting of the counter is increased when the turnstile arms are moved in a forward direction but not reduced when the arms are moved in the reverse direction, has also a second shaft 53 projecting from the casing and coupled for rotation with forward movement of the counting mechanism, means 50, 52 being provided for preventing alteration of the setting of the counter by rotation or attempted rotation of the second shaft in the reverse direction. The shaft 30 has a pin, which engages in a slot of the shaft 33 of the turnstile, and carries a ratchet 34 engaged by a sprung pawl 36 mounted within a bevel gear 40 meshing with a bevel gear 44 fast on the shaft 45 of the counter. Reverse rotation of the counter is prevented by a sprung pawl 60 which engages the bevel gear 40. At its other end, the shaft 45 carries a disc 50 on which is mounted a sprung pawl for co-operation with a ratchet 52 carried by the second shaft 53. The latter may alternatively be driven from the bevel gear 40 or from the shaft 30 in which latter case, only one free-wheel coupling is necessary. The shaft 53 is used to control, in known manner, remote indicating means for crowd-control purposes. The counter 13 is secured to a base-plate 10 itself over which a cover 14 may slide or be fixed by screws 18. The cover has a window 15 covered by transparent material held in place by clips 17. Both the cover and base-plate have two lugs 22, 11, through which a pair of screws 24 pass to secure them to the turnstile and the lugs 22 have deep recesses into which sealing material 27 may be inserted. According to the First Provisional Specification the second shaft 53 may be formed integrally with the driving shaft 30. Specification 658,226 is referred to.
