508,511. Impulse transmitters. AUTOMATIC TELEPHONE & ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Dec. 31, 1937, No. 36297. Convention date, Jan. 2. [Class 40 (iv)] In an impulse transmitter of the dial type employing a pawl and ratchet wheel drive between the finger-plate and impulse cam, e.g. as described in Specification 234,036, [Class 40 (iv)], the pawl is held out of engagement with the ratchet wheel during the setting movement thereby preventing clicking noise. The pawl 11 pivoted at 12 to a plate 9 on the dial shaft has a 'pin 14 situated in an opening 21 in a plate 20 mounted between friction washers 18, 19 on a shoulder of the combined ratchet wheel 16 and gear wheel 17 driving the impulse cam. When the dial is rotated, the pawl rides up a ratchet tooth and engages the edge 26 of the opening 21 at ,the outside corner whereupon the plate 20 is carried around by the dial. The drag on the plate by washer 19 and the inclination of the edge 26 of the opening tend to urge the nose of the pawl outwardly against the action of the pawl spring (not shown) and the drag is increased by the power spring 24 of the dial which holds the parts in frictional engagement. When the dial is released the pawl engages the ratchet wheel and operates in the usual manner.
