A releasable coupling for a counting mechanism comprises levers 12 carried by an end cop 3 fast with a driving or driven shaft 2 and the levers are rocked into frictional engagement with a flange 8 fast with a driven or driving gear 5. As shown, the flange 8 projects into recesses 9 in the levers 12 which are urged together by a spring 18 so that the corners 21 of the recesses 9 grip the flange. To release the coupling the outer ends of the levers 12 are urged apart by rotating a cam 14. In Fig. 5 (not shown) the spring urges the levers to the released position and rotation of the cam engages the coupling. The flange may be a disc with the levers disposed at its periphery or the flange may have a circular recess in which projections on the levers engage.
