Abstract

1403616 Tape measures RABONE CHESTERMAN Ltd 15 Nov 1973 [14 Dec 1972] 57853/72 Heading G1M The tape is wound on a readily replaceable toothed spool 12, Fig. 1, gear-driven by a spring energized re-wind spool 14 fast or integral with teeth 18, and may be unwound over a freely rotatable drum 19, Fig. 2. The tape may be viewed either externally as it is drawn out of opening 20, or through a window 21, and may be graduated on both sides, allowance being made between the sets of markings according to the added length of casing. A ratchet or brake (not shown) acting on the parts 12, 14, 17, 18 or the tape itself may be provided and the gearing drive ratio can be altered to vary the speed of re-wind. An intermediate gear may be provided to enable the spools 12, 14 to have the same rotational direction and the tape may be inverted after leaving the window 21 so that only one side need be graduated. In a modification the tape is led directly away from the spool 12 without passing over the spring spool, and the drum 19 and window 21 are dispensed with.
