Abstract

657,991. Rotary engines or pumps. SW AIN, A. F. June 14, 1949, No. 15769 Class 110(ii)] A rotary hydraulic apparatus has pairs of axially-sliding vanes 19 in a rotor 13 which are controlled by cam rings formed of flat portions 23, 24 and inclined slopes 27. A pump 50, of the above type, driven by an internal-combustion engine on a vehicle through a chain wheel 51 may supply hydraulic motors 49 of the same type, each contained within a vehicle wheel 48. The rotor is provided with stub shafts 14 having bearings 15 and oil seals 16. A floating ring 12 is contained within the split casing 11 to prevent the vanes from moving outwards radially. Each annular space 18 is provided with an inlet and an outlet for the liquid, the seal 24 being located between them. The rotor has axial vents 34 which allow equality of pressures axially. The lower seal 24 may be pressed upon by an adjustable screw, Fig. 4 (not shown). Fig. 5 shows another arrangement with a central pump outlet 31 from the space 18 and a similar inlet. The ring 22 is flexible and a portion pressed inwards to seal off the working chamber by one of the pistons 35a, 35b. When a control lever is in the position F shown, the top seal 23 is fully withdrawn and the lower seal 24 against the rotor. The pump then delivers for forward motion of the vehicle. Position N, R of the lever cause no delivery of the pump (neutral) or for reverse motion of the vehicle. Fig. 6 shows a transmission system for a pair of road wheels 48 for a vehicle, each wheel being secured to the rotor of a hydraulic motor 49. The pump 50 is as shown in Fig. 5.
