Abstract

657,680. Rotary brushes; brushing apparatus. CURRAN ENGINEERING, Ltd., E. and AMERY, H. W. Jan. 1, 1948, No. 5. [Class 19] [Also in Group II] In an arrangement for supporting a pair of co-operating rotary brushes, the brushes are carried on arms pivotally mounted at spaced positions and an abutment carried by one arm is arranged to co-operate with an abutment on the other arm in such a manner that a force applied to one arm to effect movement thereof causes a movement of the other arm whereby the spacing between the brushes is varied. In one arrangement, cylindrical brushes 8 and 10 are mounted in bearings on the horizontal arms 3b and 4b of pairs of bell-crank levers 3 and 4 which are pivotally mounted on side members 1 and 2 of a supporting frame. Lever 3 has a downwardly projecting arm 3c which co-operates with an upwardly projecting arm 4c of lever 4. The brush 10 tends to move downwards under its own weight whereby arm 4c abuts arm 3c and thus when the lever 3 is held in any given position, lever 4 and brush 10 take up a corresponding position. If brush 8 be moved downwards by clock-wise rotation of lever 3, then lever 4 is made to rotate anticlockwise and brush 10 moves towards brush 8. Resilient means, e.g. a spring or the pads 11 and 12 may be interposed between the abutments; this allows say brush 8 and lever 3 to be fixed and still permit some movement of lever 4 and brush 10 when material passing between the brushes varies substantially in thickness. As shown, either brush may be locked in position. Thus, the levers 3 and 4 have arms 3a and 4a provided with slots 16 and spindles 13 pass through the slots in each lever 3 and 4 and through the side frame members 1 and 2. Each spindle has a hand lever 112 and screws into a fixed nut on side frame member 2, the levers 3 and 4 being clamped in a given position by tightening with levers 112. Rotation of levers 3 within the limits of the slots 16 is effected by rotation of a screw threaded rod 19 rotatably supported on a frame bracket 20 and engaging a nut 18 fixed in a cross member 17 whose ends are secured to levers 3. Each brush is driven from a suitable power source. The machine shown is adapted to brush metal in strip form 22. In a modification (not shown), horizontal beams are pivotally mounted at their midpoints on the levers 3 and 4 to support two pairs of co-operating cylindrical brushes, there being provided means to maintain the beams on levers 3 and 4 in parallel so preserving the correct relation of the brushes of both pairs.
