A roller leveller straightening machine has means for longitudinally and/or laterally tilting the work rolls which comprises two co-operating wedge members rotatable relative to one another. An upper roll assembly 12 includes work rolls 13, mounted on a framework 14, backed by rolls 15 in brackets 16. The distance between the upper roll assembly 12 and a lower roll assembly 17, having work rolls 18 backed by rolls 21, is adjusted by a hand wheel 29 which operates, through connecting rods 30 and gearboxes 31, screw jacks to raise or lower a crosshead 22 carrying the upper roll assembly 12. The assembly 12 is supported on the crosshead 22 by spring assemblies 23 pivoted at 24 to a plate 25 in turn hinged through brackets 26 on an axle 27 in bearings 28 on the crosshead 22. The roll assembly 12 is tilted longitudinally, that is in the direction of travel of sheet through the machine, by turning the axle 27 by a lever arm 32 and, through arms 34 bearing on the plate 25, rocking the plate 25 and thus the roll assembly 12. The rolls 13 are flexed by adjusting the backing rolls 15 by turning a hand wheel 35 which, through rods 36 and gear-boxes 37, actuates cams bearing on the brackets 16. The lower roll assembly 17 is tilted laterally by a rotary wedge device 38 comprising two wedge-shaped plates 39, 40, the upper plate 39 fixed to the frame 19 of the roll assembly 17 and the lower plate 40, turnably mounted on a pin 41 on the floor 42 of the machine. The plates 39, 40 are connected by a common pivot pin 43 and the plate 40 is turned by a hand wheel 45 screwing on a spindle 50 connected by a rod 51 to a bracket e2 on the plate 40, so that the roll assembly 17 tilts laterally, guides 44 preventing its rotation. The wedge plates 39, 40 could be arranged to tilt the assembly 17 longitudinally, lateral tilting adjustment could then be effected by lever means. Alternatively, one wedge device could be provided for each roll assembly 12, 17, or the upper roll assembly only could be tilted by wedge means.
