Abstract

657,458. Two-part couplings. BURTT, H. H. Feb. 21, 1949, No. 4687. [Class 38 (i)] In a self-separating pin and socket connector; each pin contact carries a spring biassed ejecting sleeve adapted to be depressed by the socket contacts as the parts of the connector are engaged and to individually force the socket contacts off the pin contacts when said parts are released. Fig. 2 shows a multiple contact connector in which the body of each part 21, 31 comprises a single moulding. Part 21 carries the pin contacts 51 in bores 52, each contact having a flange 84 bearing on a shoulder 54 and prevented from moving axially by a spring clip 55 engaging the outer face of the body. Slidable on each pin against a spring 96 is an ejector sleeve 93 its outward movement being limited by a spring clip 92. Mounted respectively in larger bores 56, 57 in opposite sides of the part 21 are a centering and locating socket and pin 58, 59 which co-operate with a pin and socket 74, 75 carried by the part 31 in which the socket contacts 64 are mounted in a similar manner to the pin contacts 51. Recesses 77 round the sockets receive projections 78 on part 21 so as to increase the leakage path between pairs of connected contacts. Fig. 1 shows the connector applied to a rack for a radio device 16. The device, carrying the part 31, is slid into the rack so that the sockets engage the pins in part 21 mounted at the rear of the rack at the same time depressing sleeves 93. The connector parts are mounted by means of washer-like pieces 24, 37 engaging flanges 23, 36 thereon respectively. A nut 44 on a hinged bolt 45 is engaged with a lug 43 on the device to retain the latter in the rack. On release of the nut and withdrawal of the device the ejector sleeves effect instant disconnection of the connector contacts. Where the invention is applied to the free coupling of two cables, the ejector springs may be sufficiently strong to effect disconnection of the connector parts by themselves when suitable locking means is released.
